Synopsis
Sister Mary covertly enters a Roman Catholic convent’s sealed gates at night and takes a ring of keys to flee. Her leg is broken by four hooded individuals, who subsequently render her comatose. Afterward, Mary is buried alive and awakens in a casket.
Sister Cecilia was a young novice who converted to Christianity at a young age. Cecilia believes God saved her for a reason after surviving drowning in a freezing lake and being pronounced dead for seven minutes. Father Sal Tedeschi extends an invitation to Maria to join an Italian monastery that cares for dying nuns. After making her last commitment to follow the evangelical counsels, Cecilia becomes a nun and wears a rosary.
After becoming friends with Sister Gwen, Cecilia notices several strange things, such as an elderly nun who has scars on the bottoms of her feet that resemble crosses. The Holy Nail, which crucified Jesus, is kept in the convent chapel. Cecilia is horrified to find that she is pregnant despite being a virgin, following a series of dreams in which she sees hooded creatures. Many of the residents of the convent refer to the infant as a “blessing” and start treating her as the next Virgin Mary.
Envious of Cecilia, Sister Isabelle, tries to drown her and then ends her life. Cecilia becomes sicker and loses one of her teeth. Father Tedeschi denies her desire to be taken to an appropriate hospital. After openly criticizing the convent authorities for this aberration, Gwen is removed by Father Tedeschi and Deacon Enzo.
When Cecilia opens her file, she is horrified to learn of the accident she had as a youngster. She follows after hearing a lady cry, and to her horror, she sees a hooded figure severing Gwen’s tongue. When an elderly nun shows up, Cecilia is silenced. The elder chastises her, telling her that she will never leave the convent, despite her pleas to go.
To get to the hospital, Cecilia pretends to have miscarried, but when people catch her in the lie, she gets locked up. Tedeschi reveals that before becoming a priest, he worked as a geneticist and impregnated nuns using DNA samples from the Holy Nail in an attempt to bring in a new messiah. Tedeschi made multiple unsuccessful efforts before Cecilia, frequently ending in deformed fetuses. Tedeschi imprints a cross, a mark shared by numerous other nuns, on Cecilia’s foot.
Cecilia tries to get away once more. She uses a crucifix to beat Mother Superior to death, and soon afterward, her water breaks. After successfully strangling the cardinal with her rosary, she pours ethanol into Tedeschi’s lab. Tedeschi shows up and tries to physically stop her, but Cecilia manages to get away by using a lighter to ignite the ethanol.
After putting out the fires, Tedeschi escapes the laboratory and relentlessly pursues Cecilia, driving her into the convent’s underground catacombs. Cecilia discovers a hole in the catacomb’s walls and Gwen’s disfigured body. She is about to get away when Tedeschi discovers her, and a struggle starts. While Tedeschi tries to sever Cecilia’s stomach, she stabs him in the throat with the relic of the Holy Nail that she had earlier taken from the chapel. Cecilia gives delivery painfully and chews through the umbilical cord herself after leaving the tombs. The sight of the baby, which is heard making odd, animalistic noises, horrifies her. Cecilia staggers off to pick up and move a nearby rock,
